Hosted by the Research Institute for Soft Matter and Biomimetics, the International Workshop 2017 on Soft Matter will be hold in the Xiamen International Exhibition＆ Conference Center during Nov. 02-03. As the forum will provide a platform for people from different fields to exchange idea across the disciplines of soft matter research and engineering, anyone who is interested will be most welcome.

About the forum
Soft condensed matter physics and the related subjects have been attracting significant and broad attention across physicists, chemists, biologists, materials scientists and engineers. As a multidisciplinary research area, the scope and implications of soft matter research have experienced a rapid expansion and enrichment. Recently, the occurrence of new ideas, new facilities and modern technologies which have been extending our capability has opened new opportunities in soft matter research. Apart from the “classical” soft materials, i.e., polymers, liquid crystals, colloids, etc, the occurrence of new high performance and functional materials, i.e., carbon fiber, nanocomposite, graphite, and flexible wearable devices, enriches greatly the subjects of research in this field. In addition, the new challenges arising from environment related problems, such as fog haze, water pollution control, and the demands of environmental friendly materials, and bio medicine related research fields transfer the soft materials research to new directions and phases.
This forum will serve as an overview on the latest progress on soft matter, including theory and experiments covering the correlation between the mesoscopic structures and the performance of various soft materials, the control of the biomineralization and the assembled structures of soft and bioinspired materials, and their wide application potentials in flexible and implantable optical/photonic/electric devices.
The construction of flexible devices based on bio-/biomimetic and supra- molecules turns out to be one of the most fascinating subjects in this area. One of the main challenges for the state-of-the-art bio photonic/electronic circuits lies in the development of soft electric/optical materials. In this regard, the combination of the "bottom-up" fabrication approaches by supramolecular self-assemblies, molecular scaffolds, and external force directed assemblies and the "top-down" techniques such as lithography etc. in generating multifunctional devices will be covered.
Although this forum cannot cover the progress in all soft matter research areas, we hope that it will be able to highlight the major development in some of the emerging key research topics. It is expected that this forum will bring the participants from different disciplines and different parts of the world a timely overview, which will inspire more sparkling ideas in soft matter research and more breakthroughs in the years to come. We expect that this workshop will generate a bigger impact, and further stimulate exciting collaborations in soft matter and related subjects among different disciplines in the international scientific communities.
